Can VoIP Work During a Power Outage?

Many devices require a power supply to operate. If your device is powered via Power over Ethernet (PoE), your phone service will not be interrupted unless your router is also down. In that case, your internet connection will be unavailable.

However, you can still stay connected by using a device with an independent internet connection, such as your mobile phone with a VoIP application. Alternatively, you can activate call forwarding to another number in order to temporarily handle your incoming calls.

    Frequently asked questions

PoE (Power over Ethernet) is a technology that allows a device to receive power through an Ethernet network cable, eliminating the need for a separate power adapter.

If my phone uses PoE, will it continue to work during a power outage?

Only if the PoE switch or the equipment providing power remains operational, for example through a UPS or another backup power source.

Yes. If you have a VoIP application installed on your mobile phone and access to mobile data (4G or 5G), you can continue making and receiving calls.

Do I need a UPS for VoIP telephony?

To maintain VoIP service availability, it is recommended to protect the following devices with a UPS:

    • Router
    • Switch
    • Modem
    • IP phones
    • PBX or VoIP telephone system

Yes. VoIP services offer features such as call forwarding, mobile applications, and cloud PBX systems, which help maintain communications even during emergency situations.

The most common best practices include:

    • Using a UPS
    • Enabling call forwarding
